Posted: 03 Aug 2013 12:42 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: Kindle for iOS lets you read sample chapters in the latest version and offers a built-in dictionary for quick reference. You also have the the Send to Kindle feature for saving items from around the Web. Bad: Apple's rules prohibit a dedicated e-book store, and it's hard to keep track of your bookmarks. Bottom Line: Kindle for iOS is a rock-solid e-reader for anyone already invested in Amazon's ecosystem, but it's harder to browse and buy books than it is with the native iBooks app. [Read more] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2013 09:07 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Lenovo ThinkPad T431s is a simple, straightforward business laptop that is built tough, has ample security options, and is thin and light enough for daily commuting. It also has an excellent keyboard and works well with Windows 8. Bad: If having the latest Intel processors or discrete graphics is important, you'll have to pass. Bottom Line: A buttoned-down T-series with some modern touches, the Lenovo ThinkPad T431s is a business laptop you won't mind traveling with unless you need the latest and greatest components. Posted: 02 Aug 2013 08:48 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Sony STR-DN840 is extraordinarily well-featured for the price, with its built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirPlay, allowing for convenient wireless streaming from nearly any mobile device. There are six HDMI inputs, which is enough to cover almost every home theater. And its sound quality is solid, although not a standout. Bad: No MHL-compatible inputs or true second-zone audio support. Bottom Line: The Sony STR-DN840 is by far the best AV receiver value of the year, offering tons of wireless connectivity and six HDMI inputs for well under $500. [Read more] |
Posted: 02 Aug 2013 07:31 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: LG's LA8600 series exhibits accurate color and very good video processing; beautiful minimalist design with hairline bezel and distinctive stand; excellent Smart TV suite anchored by unique Motion Control remote; superior cable box control and TV listing feature; voice control; built-in camera for Skype; includes four pair of 3D glasses. Bad: Relatively expensive; lighter black levels; somewhat uneven screen uniformity; cable box control scheme still inadequate for heavy DVR users; no Amazon Instant Video app. Bottom Line: Although its lovely frame is packed with well-executed features, the flagship-priced LG LA8600 series LED LCD TV has the picture of a midrange model. Posted: 02 Aug 2013 05:03 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Toshiba Excite Pure has a Micro-HDMI port and a microSD slot, so you can add up to 64GB of additional storage space. It's also one of the cheapest 10-inch tablets on the market at $299. Bad: The tablet's physical display has an outdated resolution, limited viewing angles, and washed-out colors. The older Tegra 3 processor and 1GB of RAM make the Excite Pure sluggish. Bottom Line: The Toshiba Excite Pure is one of the cheapest 10-inch tablets out there at $300, but even at that price, it's too expensive for the experience it offers. [Read more] |
Posted: 01 Aug 2013 06:59 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Motorola Moto X squeezes a speedy camera and futuristic voice command capabilities into a well-crafted design that hits the sweet spot between screen size and comfort. The phone has great battery life and is available in an endless variety of customized designs. Bad: With no expandable storage, space could get tight, especially on the 16GB base model. The screen isn't as big and sharp as those on some competing handsets. Bottom Line: While in screen quality and storage capacity it lags behind rival superphones, the Moto X's superbly compact and comfortable design, whiz-bang voice controls, and long battery life make it a worthy Android contender.
