Good: The HTC 8XT is trim and attractive, runs long, and takes quality pictures. It also connects to Sprint's growing 4G LTE network and has powerful speakers.
Bad: The HTC 8XT's dual-core processor is slow and applications handle sluggishly. Its Windows Phone 8 OS has a comparatively small app selection compared to Android and iOS.
Bottom Line: Though the HTC Windows Phone 8X brings some needed OS freshness to Sprint, its sluggish processor and average display make it hard to recommend for anyone but committed Windows Phone 8 fans. [Read more]

Good: TouchCast has great tools for creating your own show, and even lets you bring up interactive content for your audience.
Bad: The app doesn't let you add music, which makes videos a little dry.
Bottom Line: As long as you take the time to learn its features, TouchCast has a ton of potential for making great videos. [Read more]

Toshiba Qosmio X75-A7298

User Rating:
Good: The Toshiba Qosmio X75 comes packed with an Intel Haswell CPU, new Nvidia graphics, a combo SSD/HDD drive, and even a Blu-ray writer.
Bad: The bulky design has a budget feel for a premium-price laptop, battery life is disappointingly short, and it lacks newer features such as DisplayPort, Thunderbolt, or even a touch screen.
Bottom Line: Toshiba's multimedia and gaming Qosmio X75 laptop gets great performance from its high-end components at a reasonable price, but the design and some features feel dated. [Read more]

Harman Kardon AVR 1610

User Rating:
Good: The Harman Kardon AVR 1610 sports a slim, attractive design and weighs just 10 pounds. It has built-in Bluetooth and five HDMI inputs -- a potent combination for a modern home theater. The $400 price is particularly reasonable for what it offers.
Bad: The AVR 1610's Bluetooth implementation kills a lot of the instant-gratification fun of wireless audio streaming. The remote ends up being frustrating to use, thanks to unreasonably small volume buttons. And the AVR 1610 came up a little short in our listening tests, especially when using the automatic speaker calibration.
Bottom Line: The Harman Kardon AVR 1610 appears to have a great combination of features and looks, but doesn't quite live up to its promise. [Read more]

User Rating:
Good: The lightweight, reasonably priced Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 wireless stereo headset improves upon the Go 1, with better sound quality and a sweatproof design, The step-up BackBeat Go 2 + Charging Case includes a protective case that has a built-in battery for charging on the go.
Bad: Battery life isn't great (4.5 hours), so the inclusion of the Charging Case is an important extra.
Bottom Line: The inclusion of a charging case as part of this bundle helps the excellent Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 overcome its one serious weakness: short battery life. [Read more]

2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel

User Rating:
Good: The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel easily tops 50 mpg on the freeway. The standard MyLink cabin tech system is responsive, and its icon-based format is easy to use. The Cruze Diesel works with OnStar's Remote Link smartphone app.
Bad: At idle or low speed, the diesel clatter is pronounced, and there is quite a bit of acceleration lag. The diesel version is the priciest Cruze model in the lineup.
Bottom Line: With solid cabin tech, the 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel competes well with compact sedans and gets stellar fuel economy, but high initial cost and the price of diesel eat into the savings. [Read more]

Good: Office Mobile for Android has an intuitive interface for making quick edits to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents on the go.
Bad: You're not getting the power of Office 365 on your Android device, so you shouldn't have to be a subscriber to use the app. And can we get some tablet support, please?
Bottom Line: Office Mobile is worth downloading if you're a current Office 365 subscriber, but with only basic editing features, this app should be free for all. [Read more]

Nvidia Shield

Posted: 31 Jul 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Editor's Rating:
User Rating:
Good: The Nvidia Shield has a high-quality build with comfortable responsive buttons, and a sharp and bright touch screen. Expandable storage and HDMI output sweeten the pot. Sound quality through the speakers is excellent, and gaming performance is incredible.
Bad: There aren't enough quality games that support the Shield's controller and take advantage of the Tegra 4's processing power. The system is heavy and interaction with the touch screen is awkward compared with standard tablets. The beta PC streaming feature requires high-end hardware investment.
Bottom Line: The Nvidia Shield brings console-level quality to portable Android gaming, but it needs a longer list of compatible games before it can truly rival the Vita or 3DS. [Read more]
