Posted: 09 Aug 2013 02:57 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The HP Envy Rove 20 costs a bit less than some other tabletop PCs, includes great audio, and runs long enough to watch a couple of movies without being plugged in. Bad: It's heavier than some comparable big-screen systems, uses a lower-end CPU, and the 20-inch display isn't full HD. Bottom Line: HP's entry in the growing tabletop PC field, the 20-inch Envy Rove 20, is a fun family PC, but it really should have a full 1080p display. [Read more] |
Posted: 09 Aug 2013 12:05 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Nokia Asha 501 is compact and easy to use. It comes in fun, bright colors. Bad: The low-resolution screen and 3-megapixel camera disappoint. Bottom Line: For $99, the Nokia Asha 501 is worth getting if you want a small, simple, colorful feature phone. However, U.S. denizens will have to buy it unlocked. [Read more] |
Posted: 08 Aug 2013 11:57 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The KEF M200 Hi-Fi Earphones deliver very clean, well-balanced sound and feature impressive build quality with aluminum housings and a flexible arm to keep the earphones securely in place. They also have an Apple-friendly inline remote/microphone and come with a nice carrying case. Bad: Because the housing is so large, some people will have trouble getting a tight seal and comfortable fit with the included eartips. Not getting a tight seal will seriously impact sound quality. Bottom Line: The KEF M200s sound excellent, with clean, accurate sound, but they just won't fit some ears. [Read more] |
Posted: 08 Aug 2013 11:17 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The standard MyLink infotainment system in the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS offers a good array of digital audio sources and smartphone app integration. The RS' chassis and suspension are responsive, while the turbocharged engine supplies pretty good power. Bad: The six-speed manual transmission almost spoils the fun with its vagueness and oddly spaced gearing. Fuel economy is down from last year. We'd like a premium audio option and a volume knob. Bottom Line: The 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS may not be a true hot hatchback, but it brings good, forward-thinking tech and great value to the B-segment. [Read more] |
Posted: 08 Aug 2013 11:10 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a comfortably-designed tablet with a an excellently implemented stylus interface. Its myriad of software features are both useful and unique. Bad: Off- and on-contract prices are too high and as good as the stylus is, I'd still rather use my fingers for most tasks. Gaming performance is a step back from the latest and greatest 2013 tablets. Bottom Line: The AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a quality tablet, but the Nexus 7 offers contract-free 4G LTE support with better performance at a much better price. [Read more] |
Posted: 08 Aug 2013 10:55 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom's advanced controls and preset modes are easy to use. Its top-notch image quality, optical zoom, and a tripod mount make it the most flexible smartphone camera there is. Android 4.2 helps keep the device fresh and connected. Bad: Heavy, thick, and asymmetrical, the camera-shaped Zoom is incredibly awkward and uncomfortable to use as a phone. Bottom Line: Buy the Zoom if you'd like a flexible two-in-one camera/smartphone, no matter the size. But enthusiasts should stick to standalone shooters, and slimmer smartphones -- like the arguably better Nokia Lumia 1020 -- will satisfy most photo needs. [Read more] |
Duolingo: Learn Languages for Free (Android) Posted: 08 Aug 2013 10:03 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: Duolingo is completely free and turns language-learning into a game, broken down into short lessons. Progress is stored in the cloud and can be synced between devices. Bad: The app could use a wider variety of question types and support for more languages. Also, in-depth lessons on sentence structure and verb conjugations would be really helpful. Bottom Line: As language learning apps go, Duolingo is a fantastic option that's completely free, but don't expect it to help you become completely fluent. [Read more] |
