Facebook Home

Good: Facebook Home puts the social network front and center, and introduces a chatting system that's immediately addictive and useful. It's easy to tweak for maximal (or minimal) interaction.
Bad: In full effect, Facebook Home forces you to relearn how to navigate your phone. The transition from Facebook Home to the chatting and mobile apps should be smoother.
Bottom Line: Because Facebook Home dominates your Android start screen, it really only makes sense if you're a Facebook junkie. Luckily, you can dial down Facebook Home or completely remove it, even if it comes preloaded on your device. [Read more]

HTC First

User Rating:
Good: As Facebook Home's debut handset, the HTC First delivers the social network's complete Android skin experience, along with Android 4.1 functionality at an affordable price. Android purists seeking a stock OS can get it by disabling Facebook Home.
Bad: Without Facebook Home, the First is a forgettable handset, from midrange camera hardware to its utilitarian design. It lacks a removable battery and microSD slot.
Bottom Line: Facebook fanatics -- and, crazily, Android purists -- looking for a functional Android phone will enjoy the HTC First. Everyone else can move along. [Read more]

Good: Fetch is a fun touch-screen adventure with colorful graphics, an incredibly touchable interactive world, and is filled with small challenges and mini-games to keep you interested.
Bad: Some of the touch zones require precise taps, resulting in mild frustration as you circle back to the same spot to try it again.
Bottom Line: Fetch is an entertaining adventure for both kids and adults alike, with colorful cartoon-like graphics, an extremely touchable interface full of little items to interact with, and challenging puzzles to solve as you explore a fantastical world. [Read more]

Good: Tumblr for Android has a beautiful and dead simple interface with nifty navigation buttons.
Bad: Animated GIFs don't show up in the Home feed. There's no landscape support or tablet-optimized version.
Bottom Line: Despite its minor imperfections, this app is a must-have for any Tumblr user. [Read more]

Good: Durable metal housing, a Kevlar-braided cable, a two-year warranty, and a generous frequency range give the V-Moda Remix Remote earbuds an edge over the competition.
Bad: These are stunning headphones inside and out, but they're stylistically reserved compared to the glitz of other flashy, modern designs.
Bottom Line: The V-Moda Remix Remote headphones earn our Editors' Choice recommendation with a colorfully dynamic sound profile, a generous two-year replacement warranty, and a handful of accessories that ensure a tight seal and versatile usability. [Read more]

HP Pavilion Chromebook 14

Editor's Rating:
User Rating:
Good: The HP Pavilion Chromebook 14 feels more like a traditional laptop than other Chromebooks. Its big screen and Chrome's improved offline capabilities make a better case for the category.
Bad: Other Chromebooks perform better and run longer. The limited Chrome OS is still not for everyone, or even for most. This model lacks the mobile broadband that makers of other Chromebooks have touted as a must-have feature.
Bottom Line: The HP Pavilion Chromebook 14 advances the argument for Chrome as a low-cost mainstream computing environment, but the laptop's most noteworthy feature is a slightly bigger screen. [Read more]

Good: The Room has intensely challenging puzzle gameplay, beautiful steampunk-like graphics, and immersive ambient sounds as you try to progress through the storyline.
Bad: Viewing and zoom controls can get a little frustrating at times.
Bottom Line: If you like puzzle games, The Room is a unique and addictive app you should get right away, with great visuals, pitch-perfect sounds, and plenty more to keep you struggling to figure out just how to unravel the mystery. [Read more]

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Posted: 09 Apr 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Editor's Rating:
User Rating:
Good: The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is comfortable to hold and has the best-looking small tablet screen yet. Writing with the S Pen feels natural and is preferred over typing on a tablet screen. Storage can be expanded via microSD, and the Watch On feature has potential as a universal remote/video content hub.
Bad: The $399 price is a lot for a small tablet, no matter its features. It's not as thin or as light as the iPad Mini, and some people won't appreciate the highly saturated look of the OS. Also, its face buttons sometimes get in the way and there are occasional performance hangs.
Bottom Line: The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a stunning tablet with a truly useful stylus, but it's not worth $400 unless you're an artist or prefer pen input. [Read more]
