3 Mozilla Webmaker Tools You Should Know Posted: 25 Apr 2013 06:01 AM PDT Mozilla is off to a good start converting regular web users into web makers. Webmaker tools are a great resource for aspiring developer and designers who want to take the next big step in learning and building. This post will take a brief look at three Mozilla Web Maker Tools, respectively Thimble, X-Ray Goggles, and Popcorn Maker. These three tools will allow you to learn how to code, inspect the codes of other already-built sites and produced mashup of videos. Recommended Reading: Responsive Web Design Tools For Designers ThimbleThimble is best for web creator for beginners. Some of the projects users can choose from are creating an online portfolio, an avatar or a web resume, or even make their own Internet Defense League webpage. Thimble’s editor is far from a traditional full-fledged editor. It has simple tools like the syntax hints helper, spell checker, preview and text sizes, probably a good tool for beginner-level designers and developers. Thimble’s hints popup, another wonderful feature for beginners lets the user view some useful hints and information when editing or viewing a line of code or certain CSS/HTML element. Thimble also makes it easy to publish your creations and share them with friends.
The publish feature gives you two links: one, for sharing with all your friends and followers and two, for editing published projects in the future. In the publish project popup there is also a tab to share your project on Google, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
X-Ray GogglesTo learn coding, sometimes you have to look at how other sites are coded. Mozilla Webmaker’s X-Ray Goggles, when activated, lets you inspect the code behind any web page anywhere from Hongkiat.com to your own blog. It work’s basically like the browser’s inspect tool but with fewer features. Installing it is as easy as drag-an-dropping it into the browser’s bookmark bar. After you install it, you can use Goggles on whichever website you browse in the future. To use Goggles, type in the URL of the website in which you would like to inspect. The default Goggles URL displays to you a basic webpage with an image embedded on it. Goggles also has a handy built in editor so you can remix and adapt the webpage live in Goggles, and see the changes right before your eyes. Goggles also allows you to publish your remixed and created work in Goggles basically the same way that Thimble does. Just make sure the content you are remixing is not copyrighted. Popcorn MakerPopcorn Maker makes it easy to enhance, remix and share web media and video. Start it up, type in a video URL of HTML5, Youtube, Vimeo, or Soundcloud. This is where the fun starts to happen; you can then remix the videos by adding elements and media features on your sidebar by dragging and dropping to the appropriate timeframe of the video. |
Freshen Up Your iPhone Icons With CocoPPa Posted: 25 Apr 2013 03:01 AM PDT If you are an iPhone user, you are probably used to restrictions on how you can customize which app goes onto your home screen. Unlike the flexibility afforded by Android phones when it comes to customizing homescreens, with the iPhone, you can’t change the user interface without jailbreaking your device; or can you? With CocoPPa you can actually change the look of your iPhone icons for free and without jailbreaking your phone. It basically works by linking a new icon to each app, giving you the freedom to freshen up your iPhone homescreen for a change. Here’s how to work the app. Recommended Reading: 40 Creative iPhone Wallpapers To Make Your Apps Look Good Assigning New IconsTo start, download and install CocoPPa into your iPhone. You will see a range of icons to choose from in the ‘New Icons’ and ‘Popular Icons’ sections. Pick an icon you want to use. For our example, we are replacing the old Instagram icon. Picking the icon will bring you to a new page where you can setup the icon onto your home screen. Tap on ‘Set up link’. After that choose ‘App Search’, and link it to your Instagram app. Confirm the linking and you can even rename the app if you want. When you’re done, tap on ‘OK’ and it will open in Safari. On Safari, press the ‘Option’ icon. Then, choose ‘Add to Home Screen’. Exit Safari and you will find your new Instagram icon on your home screen. Launch the app as normal by tapping on it from your home screen. Note that there might be a delay of around 1 to 2 seconds before the app loads. Assigning Icons As ShortcutsWith CocoPPa, you can also add icons as shortcuts to call, email a contact, send a message or as a URL shortcut. To do so, choose the icon you want to assign to the task. Then, on the linking page, under ‘Link types’ choose either Phone Call, E-mail, Message or URL. 1. If you set the icon to ‘Phone Call’, it will call a pre-assigned number, it will automatically call the person when you press the icon. 2. And if you set the icon to’E-mail’, it will take you to the compose e-mail page with the sender’s info filled in. 3. You also can set the icon as a shortcut to ‘Message’. When you launch it, it will open at the "New Message" page with the receiver’s info entered. 4. Lastly, you can also assigned the new icon to open a ‘URL’, or a page that you have pre-assigned it to. Additional InfoNote that deleting the original app icon may cause the CocoPPa icon to not function. This is because the new icon would not be able to find the original app icon and run the program. If the original icons are taking space in your home screen, you can store them in a folder. You can choose to sign up for a CocoPPa account to get unlimited icons added to your homescreen. If you choose to not have an account, you can only play with 2 to 3 icons. |
