Apple updates iLife apps with minor fixes, tweaks Posted: 01 May 2012 05:02 PM PDT (Credit: Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET) GarageBand got a few tweaks, but they are mostly limited to fixing stability issues. Apple says a bug that formerly would crash the app when uploading songs to iCloud, and another that caused an error when logging into SoundCloud with a Facebook account, have been fixed. iPhoto received mostly bug fixes and enhancements to streamline use as well, but did get a minor interface tweak that will be useful. Now when you publish a journal to iCloud, a new button lets you copy the link to clipboard -- useful for sharing freshly made journals with friends right away. iMovie received stability fixes as well, and also a small feature change: iMovie now supports songs made in GarageBand so you can add your own personal movie soundtracks. Apple also posted an update to its Cards app, but there were no new notes on what fixes or enhancements were added. [Read more]
Building a better beer tap with Android and Arduino Posted: 01 May 2012 02:01 PM PDT No beer for you (unless you have the proper credentials). (Credit: Paul Carff/David Sainte-Claire)Drinking beer requires a certain amount of supervision. Regardless if the experience is self-monitored or kept in check by our peers, keeping a close eye on the proceedings is usually a good idea. While a free-flowing fount of beer may seem like a good idea (because it is), sometimes it's probably best to be kept under lock and key. Or in this case, under an NFC reader. Google employee and home-brewer Paul Carff designed the KegDroid as a novel way to dispense beer. Users gain access into the system by using their own individual NFC tag or badge. Using a custom app on a Xoom tablet running Android ICS, the system pulls data from Google Plus and then lets the imbibers-to-be select their beer of choice. The physical aspect of the procedure is handled by an Arduino micro controller and the system is smart enough to pour the proper amount into the glass or mug size that was selected. There are a lot of possibilities for a beer dispenser that authorizes access remotely. It's an interesting proof-of-concept that could make its way into a variety of situations and locales. (Also check out our coverage of Kegbot for additional use of "drinker accounts"). Even if it is just used to keep pesky ... [Read more]

New ZoneAlarm antivirus-firewall combo competes for free Posted: 01 May 2012 05:00 AM PDT ZoneAlarm's first free security suite1-2 of 5 Scroll Left Scroll RightZoneAlarm is making an aggressive move to attract new people to its line of security programs with what may be a first: a free antivirus program pre-packaged with a free firewall. Available exclusively from Download.com today, ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus+Firewall 2013 (download) could very well make big waves in the free security-suite space. It's the same free firewall that ZoneAlarm has produced for years, but with basic antivirus and anti-malware tools included. It's basically ZoneAlarm Pro Antivirus+Firewall from last year, with an updated engine. And did I mention that it's free? The free security suite market is highly competitive, and people use the free suites on a scale not comparable with any other software besides the browser. Avast, Avira, and AVG combined claim more than 40... [Read more]
