Cocoon has expanded its privacy-enhancement browsing tools to iPhones and iPads today with a new iOS browser called GetCocoon. The Safari alternative, which like the iOS default browser is based on WebKit, creates a buffer around your browsing habits.

GetCocoon uses Cocoon's privacy tech from its desktop browser plug-in to anonymize your browsing. In GetCocoon, as with Cocoon's add-ons, your site requests are run through Cocoon's secure servers, stripped of your identifying details.

The browser supports desktop Cocoon features such as anonymous e-mail address creation, history syncing through your Cocoon account, and single-PIN sign-on. It also lets you block iAds, although they are on by default.

Nokia commuter app drives to make Windows Phone more personal

NEW ORLEANS--What if there were an accurate way for your phone to help you time your commute on a given morning? "Take Highway 280 today instead of 101; there's an accident" for instance, or "It will take you 10 minutes longer than usual today, so you'd better leave by 7:30 in order to make that 8:30 meeting."

Unfortunately, our phones aren't quite up to being quite so helpful just yet, at least not the way I envision it in my daydreams. However, Nokia is planing an update to its Nokia Drive app that's a step in the right direction.

At CTIA 2012, Christof Hellmis, vice president of the Map Platform, showed off a commute feature that makes use of Windows Phone's dynamic live tiles on the start screen.

Called MyCommute, the feature learns how long it takes to get between the starting and ending points that you program into your phone. As the app learns your patterns and collects data on how long it typically takes to get from door to door, it will update the live start screen tile with the latest estimate, like 41 minutes to complete your commute.

Nokia has cooked up deals with a host of developers to lure more apps to the Windows Phone Marketplace for Lumia smartphone owners.

Announced at CTIA Wireless 2012 today, the new partnerships with several leading app developers are aimed at offering more relevant apps for Lumia users.

Games are hot on the list, with Angry Birds Space soaring onto Lumia phones. Though no launch date was revealed, Nokia said it's working with Angry Birds creator Rovio to design games specifically for Lumia devices. Electronic Arts is also joining the Windows Phone party, slated to offer such games as FIFA, Madden NFL, NBA Jam, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Mirror's Edge, and Yahtzee.

Among entertainment apps, an AOL Entertainment Hub will offer exclusive access to 55,000 radio stations, streaming music, and movie trailers, among other content.

Sports fans will soon be able to tap into an ESPN Hub with Live Tile updates of the latest scores and coverage of tennis games, NASCAR racing, and the 2012 Olympics. A Windows Phone version of ESPN Fantasy Football will reach Lumia owners this fall. Late next month, live coverage of the PGA Tour will also find its way onto Lumia phones, providing scores, highlights, and player information.

Lock and unlock your computer with a USB drive, secret-agent style

If you prevent access to your computer with just a password, you are missing out on an alternative (and more secure) way to lock down your computer.

Predator, a free Windows program, turns your USB drive into a key that locks your computer when it's removed. To unlock your computer, you'll have to plug the USB drive back in. (Talk about having secret-agent-style security.)

Anyone who attempts to access your computer without the USB flash drive will be hit with an epic "Access Denied" message. To get started, follow this guide:

Step 1: Download and install Predator.

Step 2: Once Predator launches, plug in your USB flash drive. None of the contents of the drive will be deleted or altered in any way, so feel free to use your primary thumbdrive.

When you insert the drive, a dialog box will appear asking you to create a password. Click OK to continue.

Step 3: In the Preferences window, take note of a few key settings. First, enter a secure, unique password in the "New password" field. If you lose your USB drive, you'll use it to unlock your computer.

If you'd like, you can check the Always Required box and you'll be asked to enter the password each time you use your thumbdrive to unlock your PC.

Finally, in the section under Flash Drives, ensure that t... [Read more]

  3. If an update is available, you'll see a screen similar to that above. Here you can see software update iOS 5.1.1 is available, and it's 54.5MB. The general notes don't really tell the whole story of what's included in the update, so make sure to tap on Learn More to see what exactly is included.

Some words to the wise: make sure iCloud has a current backup of your device; should anything go wrong during the update process, you'll need to restore to a recent backup. You can watch this video covering how to manually start an iCloud backup. Once you're ready to update, tap on Download and Install.
