Photo taking apps are a dime a dozen in the App Store, but if you look a little deeper, you can make some really cool projects as long as you use some creativity.

Instead of simply giving your photos a retro look like many of the popular camera apps, there are a number of options that turn your images into a creative project where you can use your imagination to come up with something unique.

This week's collection of apps are all about doing something different with your images on your iPhone. The first quickly turns your photos into realistic drawings. The second lets you make collages with your images and offers tons of customization options. The third lets you make old-school vinyl record covers, with really neat results.

Though there aren't a lot of features in this app, it produces cool looking drawings.

Etchings (99 cents) turns your photos into drawings, but rather than giving you an insane amount of options, the app keeps it simple. Though the lack of features and tools makes this app a sort of one-trick pony, the results are very realistic looking and you can produce good looking etchings very quickly.

The interface couldn't be more simple. On the bottom you have two buttons -- one for effec... [Read more]

In-store coupons can be used by showing your screen to the cashier so he or she can scan the bar code. Coupons can be made available for use later by saving them with a one-tap button. Additionally, you can share any good deals you find with friends via the usual social-media outlets like Twitter, Facebook, Google+, or even e-mail.

What better way to celebrate Labor Day than by eschewing all forms of labor, instead kicking back with your phone or tablet and rocking some serious run-and-gun action?

To help you accomplish that nation-honoring act of laziness, Gameloft is offering three Android games on the cheap.

Throughout the weekend, you can get Gangstar Rio: City of Saints, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, and N.O.V.A. 3: Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance from Google Play for 99 cents apiece.

These titles normally sell for $6.99 each, meaning you're getting for three bucks what would normally cost you $21.

Gangstar Rio does its best Grand Theft Auto impression, offering you an open but mission-enhanced world in which to drive, fly, and wreak mayhem on foot.

Modern Combat 3 brings the popular console game to Android, with all the same blistering military-shooter action. CNET's Scott Stei... [Read more]

Want to edit video on your iPad? Apple's $4.99 iMovie is the go-to choice for most folks. But now there's another option, and it won't cost you a penny.

Pinnacle Studio 2.0 for iPad used to be Avid Studio for iPad, and it used to cost $4.99, same as iMovie. Now owned by Corel, it's now free -- and even better than before.

Pinnacle Studio lets you arrange and edit your photos and videos, ultimately turning disparate elements into a cohesive whole.

If you've ever worked with Pinnacle Studio on your PC, you'll feel right at home with the app's similarly straightforward interface. Though you can work with it in portrait view, landscape offers the better layout, with the top half of the screen devoted to your media and a preview window and the bottom half reserved for storyboarding.

To build a movie, you simply drag a photo, video clip, transition effect, title, or song to the storyboard or timeline, then arrange those elements to your liking.

The app also lets you trim clips, overlay sound effects and voice recordings, add custom pan-and-zoom effects, and s... [Read more]

Apple has brought its new App Store design to iOS 6.

The company recently updated its iOS 6 beta with the new App Store design. As 9to5 Mac, which was first to report on the update, points out: the design boasts "cards" that display the app's icon, price, and rating, as well as a screenshot showing it in action.

After searching for programs in the new App Store design, users will see the cards displayed in a grid-like format. Users can scroll down the page to see all of the apps. In addition, Apple has made the Genius Recommendations feature far more prominent in the App Store and surfaced the Purchased apps section to help users quickly redownload programs they've already bought.
