Hardest Game Ever 2... even harder than the first Posted: 03 Jul 2013 05:14 PM PDT Hardest Game Ever 2 for Android and iOS is a pack of several reaction- and time-based mini-challenges in the form of wacky, everyday activities. Such activities range from scooping ice cream to running to the bathroom without falling to your death. Each play per mini-game requires a "star," the game's own currency. Think of it as an arcade credit. And yes, the game immediately starts to reek of a freemium model, but to its credit it's actually quite fun. The challenges aren't all that difficult at first, but the games start to become exponentially harder as the objectives and your urge to score an S rank intertwine. HGE2 has enough mini-games to test your skills through a combination of precision, reflex, and speed in a Japanese-style arcade manner. Note that although the games may be fun, they are short lived; after 50 tries or so, HGE2 quickly ramps up an aggressive series of ads and tedious, roundabout user flow to get users to pay for the game or click on banners. Unlocking "Arcade mode," which removes ads and gives you instant retries, is available for about $0.99; not too shabby for a collection of mini-games. It's especially noticeable for a game that's so reflex heavy; bumping into an ad in the middle of forcing a retry is frustrating in itself and probably... [Read more] |
Posted: 03 Jul 2013 04:43 PM PDT On Tuesday, Opera Software hit a new milestone with the final release of Opera browser for Windows and Mac. Highlights of this release include a complete migration over to the Chromium engine, as well as some new tools for improved content discovery. Opera's move to WebKit and later embracing Chromium signals a new, much more competitive push by the Scandinavian browser-maker to keep up with speedier demands, yet still maintaining some of the classic signature features of previous versions. All under the hood improvements aside, Opera has been branding itself as more of a discovery engine, rather than just another Internet browser. According to Opera Software CEO, Lars Boilesen, "The world of fascinating Web content is expanding faster than space, and we've delivered a browser that helps you to truly discover it." Indeed, when you open the browser, you'll find a new Discover tab sitting on the welcome page. Opera will curate various news articles around the world. The left drop-down will list various topics and categories tailored around your interests. The right drop-down menu lets you disco... [Read more] |
Star Apps: Jim Rash and Nat Faxon Posted: 03 Jul 2013 03:19 PM PDT Jim Rash and Nat Faxon have the creative synergy that collaborators kill for. Although Rash is famous for his Dean Pelton role on NBC's "Community" and Faxon, for starring on Fox's "Ben and Kate" as well as film roles in "Zookeeper," "Bad Teacher," and "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," when the two work together, it's Oscar-worthy. The two won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for co-writing "The Descendants," in 2012. Thankfully, the duo have joined forces once again, this time to write and direct "The Way, Way Back," the poignant coming-of-age story of an introverted teen who breaks out of his shell over a life-changing family vacation. Out July 5th and starring Liam James (as 14-year-old Duncan), Toni Collette (as his mother, Pam), and Steve Carrell (as her domineering boyfriend, Trent), it's the perfect antidote to some of the more mindless summer blockbusters. (Credit: Fox Searchlight)Download.com sat down with the hilarious Jim Rash and Nat Faxon to chat about the absence of apps in the film, the ones that would have helped them when they were coming of age, and the apps they use to amuse themselves, today. "The Way Way Back" is essentially 14-year-old character Duncan's coming-of-age story. So I'm curious, is there an app on the market today that might have made your coming of age a bit eas... Six Android apps you'll thank me for (you're welcome) Posted: 03 Jul 2013 02:17 PM PDT As a reviewer of Android apps, it's my role to sniff out what's hot and interesting on Google Play. I make it a point to try out apps old and new, as well as big-name apps, apps from startup shops, and everything in between. Among these, it's not uncommon for me to find a few apps that are just so attention-grabbing that I feel compelled to share them with the masses. They may not necessarily be the best apps of all time, or even the best apps available right now, but they are fresh and interesting titles that I just can't keep my hands off of. This is a roundup of those apps. As I encounter new ones, I will continue to update this post with my recommendations, so be sure to check back regularly. And of course, feel free to chime in with your own hot apps if you have any. Editors' note: For six hot apps on iOS, check out Jason Parker's roundup. (Credit: Screenshot by Jaymar Cabebe/CNET) Kingdom Rush ($1.99) Long considered one of the best tower defense games on iOS, Kingdom Rush has finally made its way to the Android platform. In it, your job is to fight off waves of soldiers, orcs, trolls, and other medieval fantasy monsters by plopping a variety of towers down along their path. To start, there ar... [Read more] |
