Most hardware announcements Apple makes are usually accompanied by a piece of software. With the announcement of the new iPad and Apple TV today, Apple also announced the launch of iPhoto for iOS.

You can purchase iPhoto for iOS starting today in the App Store. It will set you back $4.99, and you will need to be running iOS 5.1 on your iOS device(s) for iPhoto to install. With the size of the app coming in at 106MB, you will need to be connected to Wi-Fi to download the app on your device.

Albums After downloading and installing the app, your photos will be presented to you in albums, with four tabs along the top to narrow down the photos you want to view.

The Albums tab groups your photos by status, whether they have been edited within the app, beamed to you from another iOS device, stored in Photo Stream, or on your camera roll. The Photos tab will display the photos currently stored on your device; you won't see your Photo Stream photos stored here. The Events tab wi... [Read more]

What's more, you'll be able to use a visual storyboard and you can shoot 1080p video using the new iPad's updated HD camera and plug it into the app.

We'll tell you more after we get a hands-on.

The new GarageBand: Hands-on

Though iPhoto is the newest addition to the iPad's iLife apps, GarageBand also got a few updated features and instruments to add to its arsenal of music tools. The original version of GarageBand for iOS already impressed me with intuitive touch-screen instruments, smart instruments that required no prior musical skill, and multitrack recording features anyone could use, but the new GarageBand adds even more to like, with wireless connections of up to four iPads for live music creation, and more.

The new version is by no means a complete makeover, but it adds a new category of instruments, the ability to "jam" with others over Wi-Fi, and other smaller tweaks to make music creation easier. In my early testing, I found all the new features add up to an app that I already think is one of the best in the iTunes App Store.

In the new Note Editor you can change velocity, cut and copy, or change the note entirely if you hit a bad one.

Sonar brings iOS style social discovery to Android

Posted: 06 Mar 2012 10:26 AM PST

Sonar is riding a wave of social discovery apps that includes Banjo, Glancee and Highlight, but it isn't a newcomer. The New York based startup has made the rounds on iOS for the better part of a year, but today it's available in beta on Android to a handful of lucky readers.

Like others in the field, Sonar enables you to make meaningful connections with people around you -- people you wouldn't otherwise have known. It works by aggregating geolocation data across social networks and then creating relational correlations among individuals based on shared connections. So if you're having lunch and a friend of a friend walks in, you'll have the opportunity to connect with the person on the spot.

The field for social discovery apps is getting crowded quickly, but it seems that no one yet has gotten it quite right. Until then, we're likely to see other apps, and possibly new efforts from established geo players like Foursquare, before the industry crowns a clear winner.

If you're an Android user and want to give Sonar a shot, we have 250 invites for our readers. Just visit the ... [Read more]
