At long last, Path comes to the iPad Posted: 01 Nov 2012 08:32 AM PDT (Credit: Path) Path, the social-networking app that helps family members and close friends stay in touch, is now making its way to the iPad. According to Path, the app was built from the ground up and supports both landscape and portrait orientations. Path is especially excited about the landscape orientation, saying that it will provide a full collage of the day's events in a single pane, thanks to the iPad's larger screen screen size. Upon clicking on a photo in the collage of images and videos, users will get a full-screen view and see comments associated with it. The iPad's 9.7-inch screen size has given Path more room to display user data on the home screen, including their feed, recent activity, and friends list. Related stories |
Amazon flies into mobile games with Air Patriots Posted: 01 Nov 2012 08:04 AM PDT (Credit: Amazon) Amazon has kicked off its first mobile game, and one that can be played on both Android and iOS devices. Taking to the skies today, Air Patriots lets you command a squad of planes by moving your finger around the screen. Drawing paths on the screen manuevers the planes to the right spots to defend your territory and battle the enemy. You can outfit your fleet with 13 different types of planes. The game offers 28 levels and 7 different maps (the first 3 maps are free). The more victories you score, the more gears you collect, which can unlock more battlefields and airplanes. Rack up enough points, and Amazon says you can win a medal of honor on the rookie, pro, and veteran levels of each map to unlock even more challenges. iOS users can download Air Patriots directly from the App Store. The game supports the Retina Display built into the latest iPhones and iPads. Android users can grab it from Google Play. Amazon didn't indicate which Android devices the game supports, but it's not compatible with Google's Nexus 7. Kindle Fire owners will ... [Read more] |
New tech lets users 'Pinch' their way to multiscreen bliss Posted: 01 Nov 2012 07:08 AM PDT (Credit: Screen capture by Don Reisinger/CNET) A new display technology being tested in Japan could eventually allow mobile users to stack up smartphones and tablets to create one, big display. Dubbed "Pinch," the software is being developed at the Tokyo University of Technology. According to Diginfo, which was first to report on the news, users can place smartphones or tablets next to each other in any way they wish, and by using a simple "pinch" motion, link the two displays to create one larger screen. The pinch motion is achieved by placing one finger on one display and another finger on the other screen and bringing them together. Related stories |

iStat for iOS now monitors Windows machines, too Posted: 01 Nov 2012 05:00 AM PDT (Credit: Bjango) Software utility maker Bjango has released a new $5 version of its iStat app for iOS that now lets people remotely monitor their Windows machines, not just Macs. I've been a big fan of iStat Menus, a $16 utility that uses the OS X menu to show a variety of usage details such as CPU utilization, upload and download speeds, free storage space, and fan temperature. (Credit: Bjango)iStat for iOS shows statistics such as free storage space, battery life, and network usage for iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. And if you have an agent called iStat Server installed on your personal computers, it will show you statistics for those machines as well. It shows a "crazy amount of stats and detail," developer Marc Edwards said. That includes not just the usual parameters ... [Read more] |
