Good: ZTE's Open is an attractive smartphone that represents Firefox OS's budget aspirations.
Bad: Hardware performance suffers all across the board, from image quality to the time it takes to complete a task. Call quality wasn't so hot, either.
Bottom Line: Skip the ZTE Open and keep hunting for your low-cost smartphone, unless simplicity or Firefox development are at the top of your list. [Read more]

Good: The Nikon Coolpix L820 has better features than you'd expect for its price, including a 30x zoom lens, a high-res 3-inch LCD, and a backside-illuminated CMOS sensor. It's one of the few cameras that is powered by AA batteries.
Bad: The L820's autofocus performance is on the slow side when the lens is zoomed in or in low light or indoors. Shooting performance is not quite fast enough for fast-moving kids and pets.
Bottom Line: For those who value a long zoom lens, AA batteries, and saving a few bucks, the Nikon Coolpix L820 might be your point-and-shoot. [Read more]

Good: The Samsung UNF6300 series LED LCD TV evinced solid picture quality with accurate overall color. Excellent video processing and a uniform screen; industry's most capable Smart TV platform; IR blaster with cable box control; eye-catching design with thin bezel and cabinet; above-average sound quality.
Bad: Produces relatively light black levels; tends toward blue in dark areas; flimsy stand.
Bottom Line: Although its picture quality falls short of the competition, the Samsung UNF6300's high-end features and design for a midrange price will win plenty of converts. [Read more]

Apple iOS 7

Editor's Rating:
User Rating:
Good: Apple iOS 7 gets a complete design overhaul and adds useful features like automatic updates to make everyday use easier. Long-overdue Control Center gives quick access to most-used features. AirDrop and iTunes Radio are excellent additions.
Bad: Besides the massively overhauled design and Control Center, there are few ground-breaking new features. The flat design concept favors space over information so you'll generally need to do more scrolling to get the info you need. Some new features aren't available for iPhone 4 and 4S users.
Bottom Line: Provided you take the time to find your way around, iOS 7's new design makes it a compelling upgrade that completely transforms Apple's mobile OS. [Read more]

iTunes Radio (iOS)

Good: Unlike Pandora, iTunes Radio has Featured Stations that are great for discovering both new hits and lesser-known songs. Purchasing music from within the service is a simple, seamless process. The music library is significantly larger than Pandora's.
Bad: There are no non-music options like talk radio, news, or sports. Also, there's no access to live Internet radio streams.
Bottom Line: It doesn't offer live radio streams or non-music options, but iTunes Radio is the best way to listen to programmed radio on iOS. [Read more]

Canon PowerShot G16

Posted: 17 Sep 2013 10:59 PM PDT

Editor's Rating:
User Rating:
Good: The Canon PowerShot G16 produces very good photos in bright light, and the fast lens, optical viewfinder, and relatively streamlined design make it nice to use. Plus, it finally delivers solid continuous shooting.
Bad: A mediocre Wi-Fi implementation, no articulated LCD, and lack of manual controls while shooting video are among the ways in which the G16 lags behind the competition. And other cameras deliver better photos in low light.
Bottom Line: While the Canon PowerShot G16 is better than the G15 and remains a nice enthusiast compact, its low-light photo quality disappoints for the money. [Read more]
