Do you often open way too many tabs in your Chrome Web browser? Don't feel guilty; when I'm doing research on something, some of the tabs are so tiny that I can barely see their favicons. You may already be aware that there is a huge selection of tab management extensions in the Chrome Web store, each one with the promise of being a great productivity tool. However, Veritabs is a Chrome extension that works just a bit differently from the others, and it's definitely worth a look. Instead of making you press a button or switch to yet another tab in Chrome, Veritabs creates a list of your currently open tabs and gives you easy access to them. There's no new graphic around the names of the tabs, there are no tree-style menus, just the names of your tabs, in the order you opened them. Ready... [Read more] |
Posted: 06 Sep 2013 02:55 PM PDT Oyster, a digital book delivery service, began rolling out its iPhone app yesterday to selected subscribers with a buffet-style approach to books for $9.95 a month. Taking its name from Shakespeare's famous line in "The Merry Wives of Windsor" -- "the world's mine oyster" -- the service targets the insatiable readers among us. Oyster managed to secure up to 100,000 titles and wrangled in publishers like Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Workman, Smashworld, and even one of the "Big Six" -- HarperCollins. (Credit: Oyster)The idea is nothing revolutionary from what some libraries are already offering and what Amazon has made available to their Prime Users ($79.99/yr). Amazon Prime members can already borrow digital books on PC and Kindle. The main difference is that on Prime, users may only check out one book a month, but Oyster lets you read as many as you want. From our first glance, the service seems to offer some premium selections such as "Life of Pi," the works of Michael Crichton, Jack London, and a couple titles from the Tolkien collection. There is even a social aspect with a book recommendation ... [Read more] |
BlackBerry: We submitted BBM for iOS two weeks ago Posted: 06 Sep 2013 02:14 PM PDT (Credit: BlackBerry) Related stories
BlackBerry Messenger (or BBM), a marquee messaging app for the BlackBerry OS is coming to Apple's iOS soon. Alex Kinsella, a longtime mobile manager at BlackBerry, Tweeted today that the company submitted the first-ever iOS version of its communicator to Apple two weeks ago. According to a third-party app store tracker, it currently takes Apple four days to review an app. That ostensibly puts BBM for iOS a week and a half behind the average review length...assuming that's all there is to the story. We've contacted Apple and will update this story when we have more information. Just in case we forgot to mention, BBM for iPhone was submitted for review 2 wks ago. ... [Read more] |
CyberLink launches Director series update Posted: 06 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT On Thursday, Cyberlink announced updates for their production software line, including the 12th release of their flagship video editor, PowerDirector. The latest release includes support for editing cuts with multiple camera footage and boasts performance improvements in rendering videos. The Ultimate Suite combines ColorDirector and AudioDirector to create a more seamlessly functional editing studio that lets you switch in between each editor. This in turn makes things like color grading and audio edits much more convenient since post-production flows will now be centered around one suite. However, users are also given the option to purchase each Director program, separately. PhotoDirector also comes with more power under the hood, thanks to 64-bit compatibility, now on both Windows and Mac. It also supports high-DPI resolutions. You can grab the releases here, exclusively at Download.com. PowerDirector 12 (Windows) PhotoDirector 5 (Windows) PhotoDirector 5 (Mac) AudioDirector 4 (Windows) ColorDirector 2 (... [Read more] |
Apple's OS X Mavericks set for October launch -- report Posted: 06 Sep 2013 07:48 AM PDT (Credit: Apple) Apple's OS X Mavericks will be available later than initially expected, according to a new report. Apple is planning to launch OS X 10.9 Mavericks at the end of October, 9to5Mac reported on Friday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of the company's plans. It was originally believed Apple might launch Mavericks this month, though the company did not confirm that would be the case. In fact, Apple has not confirmed anything. The company has simply said that Mavericks, which comes with hundreds of improvements over OS X 10.8, will be available in the fall, alongside a new Mac Pro. Apple has not yet committed to a date. That might change next Tuesday, however, when Apple holds a special event where the company is expected to showcase new iPhones. It's possible Apple could announce availability for Mavericks and other products at that event. If and when it does, CNET will be there to cover every last second. [Read more] |
