Ultimate Infographic Resource Kits For Designers

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 08:01 AM PDT

To create a full infographic requires a lot of research and time. You have to expend the effort of crawling through Google to locate crucial bits of information and statistics. But there is also a large visual component based around gradients, buttons, vectors, icons, and other graphics.

I have put together a collection of resources which should prove useful to infographics designers. There is a growing steady flow of requests for infographics when you consider how saturated the market has already become. More blogs and websites are publishing fancy infographics and the trend is not slowing down!

Why not try your hand at creating one with the help of some free resources? As a reminder, do click in the links to get to the download source or for more information.

Full GUI Kits

These PSD/AI kits are some of the most helpful when you are just getting started. The majority of these GUI kits are modeled around a specific infographic UI, which includes charts and text and other graphics. If you are unsure of where to start I would recommend picking up a GUI kit and playing around with various elements.

Between all these various GUI kits you will find both vector shapes and PSD graphics. Presentation is the biggest condition when building an infographic image. A very otherwise plain-looking infographic defeats the purpose of using colorful graphics & banners in the first place!

These detailed kits may be downloaded from a number of various resources online. See if any of these graphics can match up nicely with your own interests.

Vector Elements

Adobe Illustrator is the most common editing tool for vectors. However Photoshop and a few other image editing tools also allow for playing with vector graphics. These icons and layouts are easy to scale larger or smaller since the shapes do not lose quality.

Each of the vector sets includes really helpful scalable graphics like icons, pie charts, display sliders, speech bubbles, process forms, and plenty of other related goodies. It isn’t worth trying to squeeze a majority of these into your infographic. It will take up a lot of time and might not look so good by the time you are finished.

Instead you should plan out the idea for your infographic along with the pieces of information which should be included. Then you can more accurately find vector elements which compliment the design and present understandable concepts to your readers.

Data Visualization

Aside from eye-grabbing icons you also need to present data in an easy-to-digest format. Some graphics designers prefer to use flat design trends so the elements are not distracting from the main content. But others like the visualization of a 3-D landscape with bar graphs, line charts, and other similar features. The end goal is really up to you but there are a number of resources to help with this process.

Check out these data visualization freebies which can definitely steer you in the right direction. Between all of these freebies you can find a matching display format to work with nearly any type of data. Historical dates, prices, growth over time, the possibilities are nearly endless if you keep your imagination open.

Interface Features

Infographics will not just require typical data visualization techniques. There are other common graphics you can use like badges, stickers, and buttons to showcase smaller tidbits of information. Think about other alternatives like progress steps in a web form.

The beauty of creating an infographic is that you can bend the rules to include almost any element, as long as it fits well within the whole design. Digital interfaces are fickle but easy to manipulate in the right context.

Some of these features may be too complex or unnecessary for your projects. This is especially true if you are just beginning in the world of infographics, however these interfaces might also spark a creative idea which you can build using any of these templates. Keep your thoughts open about other interface ideas because there are so many unique ways to present data.

Graphics & Icon Sets

What would any infographic be without the cute sideline graphics? Although admittedly not as important as the main content, graphics are an integral part of the infographic culture. Designing an image to catch people’s attention and bringing facts to light about more obscure topics are at the heart of infographics. There are a number of free icons to be found all around the Internet, but I feel these icons can be most properly utilized within the realm of infographic design.

Closing

Having some graphics design skills will certainly aid in the process of designing an infographic. Not only do you need to handle research on a particular topic, but also the layout and presentation of this information. The most insightful infographics will capitalize on white space along with related imagery to get their point across. I do hope these free graphics will get you started along the path to building some of the best infographics you can imagine.

Tabbed Browsing And More Finder Shortcuts With Xtrafinder [Mac]

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 03:01 AM PDT

The incoming Mac OS X Mavericks has a few features that we’re very excited about. One of them is the ability to have multiple tabs in one Finder window. Tabs work great on web browsers, and on the PC you can have tabbed browsing on Windows Explorer with Clover.

XtraFinder

However, if you cannot wait for Mavericks to officially launch (some time late October), try out XtraFinder for the time being. Not only can you start tabbing, there are also plenty of keyboard shortcuts that will turn you more productive.

Setting up XtraFinder

First, download and install XtraFinder, supported on Mac OS X 10.6.8 to 10.9. Upon launching XtraFinder from your Applications folder, you will be greeted with lots of configurable options.

Some notable features are enabling Middle-click to open folder in new tab, backspace to go back, and show Go Up button in the toolbar that lets you go up one folder in the tree.

XtraFInder Options

You can also enable dual panel Finders to quickly move and compare files in 2 folders. (The keyboard shortcut is Command + U).

XtraFinder Dual Panel

With many options to configure, test them all out to see which options work best for you.

XtraFinder Keyboard Shortcuts

XtraFinder also supports keyboard shortcuts that you can customize. If a shortcut is not something you would use, you can fully disable it so it doesn’t get in the way of your work. Otherwise, you can replace the same key combination to trigger another useful shortcut.

XtraFinder Shortcuts

Keyboard Shortcuts

Here are these default keyboard shortcuts.

Shortcuts Descriptions
Command + T Open new Finder tab.
Command + W Close current Finder tab.
Command + N Open new Finder window.
Command + U Enable dual panel.
Command + Shift + T Re-open last Finder tab.
Command + Shift + W Close all Finder tabs.
Control + Tab Switch to next tab.
Control + Shift + W Switch to previous tab.

More XtraFinder Tips

Here are a few more tips to become an expert XtraFinder user.

Clicking

  • Middle click on tab to close tab.
  • Right click on tab to navigate folder tree.
  • Double click on tab to enable/disable dual panel with following tab.

Dragging

  • Dragging folders to tab bar opens it in new tab.
  • Dragging folders or files to a tab moves it to the tab’s folder.
  • Dragging tabs out of tab bar opens it in new Finder window.
  • Dragging tabs from one Finder window to another merges it to the tab bar.

Conclusion

Navigating with keyboard shortcuts and tabs feels natural, especially when it’s the same keyboard combination we’re all used to when surfing on a web browser. It’ll be great to see XtraFinder with a bookmarks bar feature like what Clover offers Windows. However, while we wait to update to Mavericks, XtraFinder is the best temporary solution for a tabbed Finder for Mac.

Source Editing with Google Chrome Workspace

Posted: 24 Sep 2013 12:46 AM PDT

It’s common to use the browser’s Developer Tool to debug and test codes during the process of building a website. However, since the changes we made in the Developer Tool does not affect the actual codes within the designated files, we have to switch back and forth between the code editor and the browser to update the file and view the result.

To simplify this traditional workflow, Google Chrome recently introduced a new feature called Workspace that allows the author to do debugging, editing, and saving project files right from the browser. In this post, we are going to walk you through Workspace.

Enable Workspace

At the time of this writing, this feature is classified as experimental, and thus it is not enabled by default. To enable it, head over to chrome://flags/. Set the “Developer Tools experiment” to Enable, as shown below.

Restart Chrome.

Next, open the Chrome Developer Tool (DevTools). Go to the DevTools Settings, which appears as a gear icon at the bottom right of the Developer Tool. Then head over to the Experiments tab, and tick the File system folders in Source Panel, as shown below.

Restart the DevTools, and go to the Settings page as we did previously. This time, you will find a new tab called Workspace. Go to the Workspace tab, and click on Add File System to add a project folder, as follows.

Close the DevTools Setting window, and head over to the Source panel.

In the left sidebar of this tab, you will find the project folder you have just added including the CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. Now, view your project in Chrome, make some changes in the files, save the change, and you should see the changes also reflected in the actual files.

But, keep in mind the result will not be visible instantly as you are editing the files.

To view the result, refresh Chrome.

Final Thought

Even though this feature may not replace code editor entirely, it is a great addition that makes the code-debugging process more streamlined and simplified. As said, Chrome Workspac is an experimental feature, so some of the parts may change in the feature.

Have you tried working with Chrome Workspace? Share your thought in the comment box below.
