2014 BMW 328i xDrive Sports Wagon Posted: 06 Nov 2013 01:06 AM PST Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: An adaptive suspension, variable ratio steering, and all-wheel drive aid handling in the 2014 328i xDrive Sports Wagon. Available cabin tech includes a head-up display, automatic parallel parking, and app connectivity. Bad: Far too many of the 328i's features, such as voice command, only come as options. The idle-stop feature restarts the engine too roughly. Bottom Line: In its base configuration, the 2014 BMW 328i xDrive Sports Wagon doesn't justify its price, but its option sheet includes an abundance of performance and cabin technologies. Posted: 06 Nov 2013 12:38 AM PST Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: Pages has new useful features, a more efficient interface, and is a free upgrade to people with new iOS devices or older versions of the app. Bad: Using the app on the iPhone feels very cramped. Bottom Line: With more templates and a streamlined interface, the latest version of Pages is an improvement on iOS, but the Mac version is going to need time to catch up. [Read more] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2013 11:01 PM PST Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Roku LT offers nearly the full Roku experience for $50. More than 1,000 channels are supported, including Netflix, Amazon Instant, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, Pandora, MLB.TV, Amazon Cloud Player, and Vudu. It also has cross-platform search that scours several major TV and movie services to find content. Bad: There's still no official YouTube channel. Some services, including Netflix, have an outdated interface compared with what's on other streamers. The Apple TV still works better within Apple ecosystem. Bottom Line: The Roku LT is the best budget streaming-media device, easily topping the $35 Chromecast. [Read more] |
Toshiba Satellite Click W35Dt-AST2N01 Posted: 05 Nov 2013 09:02 PM PST Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Toshiba Satellite Click runs Windows 8, costs $599, and has a keyboard. Bad: Just about everything else: battery life's short, performance is slow, and the laptop is bulky and heavy. And that keyboard doesn't feel very good at all. Bottom Line: By attempting to shoehorn an affordable 13-inch laptop-tablet into a crowded market, the Toshiba Satellite Click ends up as a compromised, underperforming mess. [Read more] |
Posted: 05 Nov 2013 08:53 PM PST Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Bowers & Wilkins Z2 is a compact AirPlay speaker with an integrated Lightning dock that's attractively designed, sounds good for its size, and is lightweight enough to easily move from room to room (though it does have to be powered by an AC adapter). Bad: Expensive; could sound a little better for the price; no built-in rechargeable battery for mobile use. Bottom Line: The attractively designed $400 Bowers & Wilkins Z2 wireless speaker sounds pretty good and has a built-in Lightning dock, but it doesn't quite stand out enough in a crowded market. Posted: 05 Nov 2013 08:01 PM PST Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Sony BDP-S5100 3D Blu-ray Disc Player with Super Wi-Fi is a compact powerhouse with a wide variety of streaming services; image quality is mostly excellent, even with streaming content; good upscaling of DVDs. Bad: The disk drawer seems flimsy; DLNA streaming isn't as slick as you get from some competitors; 3:2 pull-down performance isn't as smooth as on the Panasonic BDT230; Super Wi-Fi didn't provide better streaming in our tests; no analog outputs. Bottom Line: The Sony BDP-S5100 Blu-ray player offers a wealth of services and very good image quality for the money. [Read more] |
Lumenation Lumen LED Color Smart Bulb Posted: 05 Nov 2013 06:58 PM PST Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Lumen LED Color Smart Bulb offers plug-and-play simplicity at a relatively reasonable price. Each bulb's 30,000-hour lifespan is double what you'll get from a Philips Hue bulb. Bad: The Lumen app only offers basic control of the light, with none of the automation controls or IFTTT compatibility you'll get from Philips. The bulb itself is also a little dimmer than we'd like. Bottom Line: For basic needs, the Lumen LED Color Smart Bulb might make sense, but consider waiting to see if the app improves, and to see what the competition will bring to the table. For more advanced control of your lights, a Philips Hue setup is probably worth the extra cash. [Read more] |
