Posted: 19 Oct 2012 12:40 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: Chrome OS continues to mature, as regular updates bring rapid improvement to the browser-based operating system. New changes we like include Google Play integration and 100 GB of Google Drive storage for free. Bad: Chrome the operating system continues to be hamstrung by familiar limitations: popular cross-platform programs like Skype don't work, Chrome is terrible with large numbers of tabs, and non-Google sites can't be easily integrated as apps. Bottom Line: Chrome OS struggles with the delineation between apps and Web sites, even though they are fast growing together. Great for students and casual home use, the day is coming when it'll be competitive, but it's not yet a replacement for a more mature OS. [Read more] |
Posted: 19 Oct 2012 12:30 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: Photo Punch's seemingly magical autoselection function is impressive. It has lots of clip-art-like images to add to your photos. Bad: The buggy performance is frustrating, and the tool for fine-tuning selections is difficult to use. Bottom Line: While Photo Punch is certainly a useful tool for cutting figures out of photos, the app still has a lot of annoying bugs to work out. [Read more] |
iCade 8-Bitty Retro Wireless Game Controller (iOS, Android) Posted: 18 Oct 2012 09:42 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The iCade 8-Bitty Retro Wireless Game Controller is cute, not too expensive, and works with a decent batch of iCade-compatible games. It's also Android-compatible. Bad: It's not a universal controller. Some compatible games end up with awkward button layouts. The old-fashioned lack of analog pads means it won't work with many iOS games. Android compatibility limited to an emulator app. Bottom Line: iCade succeeds in shrinking last year's arcade cabinet down to a clever pocket size with the 8-Bitty controller. Even though it won't work with many iOS games, the price is low enough that some people will want to buy it anyway for the novelty. [Read more] |
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H90 (Black) Posted: 18 Oct 2012 05:05 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H90 offers a 16x zoom, a high-res 3-inch LCD, and an above-average list of shooting options. Bad: Like Sony's other CCD sensor-based Cyber-shots, the H90 is slow and has a noticeable drop-off in photo quality above ISO 200. Bottom Line: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H90 is a fine choice for those wanting a compact 16x zoom lens for casual use. [Read more] |

Apple iPod Shuffle (2012, silver) Posted: 17 Oct 2012 04:42 PM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The iPod Shuffle includes a sturdy built-in clip; support for playlists, audiobooks, podcasts, Genius Mixes; and a multilingual VoiceOver feature that announces track information, battery status, and menu navigation. Bad: The 2GB capacity can't hold much; there's no headphone remote nor radio; the track controls tend to get pinched when clipping the iPod to your clothes; and the chances of you accidentally running it through the washing machine are quite high. Bottom Line: The Apple iPod Shuffle is an adorable way to take your favorite songs on the go, but sometimes it's too small for its own good. [Read more] |
