I've written about a lot of photo apps here in my weekly iOS app collections because it's always fun to add a little pizazz to your images. But rather than dragging out the Instagram (iOS|Android) clones and retro photo makers, I wanted to try something a little more "out there."

If you know where to look, there are several image effects apps at the App Store that give your photos some really drastic changes using overlays and unique neon lighting effects. Not every photo will benefit from these apps, but with a little creativity, I think you'll find that these apps can produce great results.

This week's collection of apps is all about adding drastic effects to your photos. The first uses several types of bright overlays to add strange effects to your photos in a couple easy steps. The second adds more features letting you add multiple effects on the same image. The third lets you add multiple overlays as well, but you can also adjust opacity and use masking tools and filters to really trick out your photos.

Funhouse of Horror 2012: Top 10 free scary games on Download.com (part 1)

Posted: 19 Oct 2012 03:54 PM PDT

It's the Halloween season, and Download.com has you covered with a collection of the greatest free horror games in our extensive (and unusual) catalog. If you're a fan of free games and/or horror, you've come to the right place. The games are in no particular order. Start with any one you feel like, or do a Halloween Gauntlet and run through them all in one night, alone in a dark room, with your back to an open door.

10. Inside

The story behind this game is as enigmatic as the game itself. From the developer's description, Inside was made in four days. No game page nor developer's site exists. You are stuck inside a building trying to make your way out, armed with only a flashlight. Explore every shadowy corner, darkened room, and frightfully long hallway as you desperately seek the exit.

Inside is a simple game but that's no reason to write it off. If you are afraid of the dark, Inside is the game for you. Inside had us cringing every time we approached a door. It is one of the shorter but more frightening one on this list.

Add Hollywood-style effects to your iOS videos

Get a quick preview of your selected action sequence before filming. Then blow up the vehicle, building, or family member of your choice!

As all movie-makers know, if you want to put butts in the seats, you need splashy special effects.

Like, say, an explosive missile strike or an alien attack. And who doesn't love a massive car crash?

Bad Robot Interactive's Action Movie FX 2.0 lets you add Hollywood-style effects sequences to the movies you shoot on your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.

Action Movie FX comes with four free effects sequences; additional two-packs cost 99 cents each.

It works like this: Choose a sequence, then start filming. When you're done, the app lets you choose where in the clip to insert the effect. After a few seconds of rendering, presto: you've got a clip that looks (and sounds) like a big-budget special-effects shop worked on it.

This is really cool, and really fun. The app comes with four free sequences -- a rollover ... [Read more]
