Sony kicks off Android 4.4 KitKat rollout across Xperia line Posted: 19 Mar 2014 06:07 AM PDT (Credit: Sony) Sony has started rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat across its Xperia line. The company on Wednesday announced that the Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, and Xperia Z1 Compact are getting KitKat updates starting on Wednesday, though timing and availability vary by market and carrier. Sony said the KitKat upgrade includes the standard interface improvements baked into the mobile OS, along with the company's "tweaked" Status Bar and Quick Settings features. Sony's KitKat installation also includes PlayStation 4-like user interface elements. Related stories

Khronos finishes WebCL 1.0 to let Web apps tap into GPU Posted: 19 Mar 2014 06:00 AM PDT WebGL has been a strong success, bringing hardware-accelerated 3D graphics to the browser. Now the standards group behind it hopes to let Web apps get even more use out of the graphics chip by releasing version 1.0 of an interface called WebCL. At this week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, the Khronos Group standards body announced the ratification and release of WebCL 1.0. WebCL lets programmers run general-purpose tasks on a device's graphics processing unit (GPU) or on a multicore central processing unit (CPU), the main brain in computers and mobile devices. The singer/songwriter who declared "Stand Beside Me" -- not "Stand by Your Man" -- is best known for empowering feminist anthems like "Bye Bye," "I'm Alright," "That's The Way," and "Bring On The Rain" (with Tim McGraw). But that doesn't mean she was too proud to ask for assistance from longtime fans of both genders via Kickstarter when it came time to fund her first post-label project. In return for achieving her $100,000 goal, she even let fans pick the name of the new, highly personal album, the track listing, the first single, and even the artwork for her newly formed Dreambound Records label logo, via social media. Preceded by single "Peace Sign," the aptly titled album "Me" was released on March 18. You funded "Me" through a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign. My 19-year-old cousin suggested it. All the kids are doing it, you know? [laughs] They explained it to me, and I was blown away. So we set our goal high, and thank God we reached it.
