New apps unveiled at SXSW

Every year, the geekiest of geeks make their annual pilgrimage to Austin, Texas, for the increasingly hip and increasingly crowded South by Southwest festival.

The event is split into three branches for film, music, and interactive, but we at CNET tend to focus on the last of these, for obvious reasons. SXSWi, as the tech-focused portion of the festival is sometimes called, acts as a sort of gigantic picnic-slash-cocktail-party for tech entrepreneurs, investors, and even regular enthusiasts to mingle at and talk bits and bytes.

And while the sentiment has noticeably tapered off a bit this year, many app developers still feel that it's the right place to try to gain some traction for their mobile creations.

With that in mind, we've rounded up a few of the more noteworthy apps that are on display at SXSW 2013.

Need that iPhone or Android photo fast? Import quickly to Mac with built-in Preview

Posted: 08 Mar 2013 06:37 AM PST

Are you a Mac user who wants to pull a photo off your iPhone, iPad, or Android device quickly, without having to go through iPhoto? There's an easy way to do that, built into your Mac: the Preview app.

For ages, I was frustrated that the Mac wouldn't let me browse my iPhone or Android phone to drag-and-drop pictures I wanted, in the way that I could when plugging them into my Windows PC.

If only I could browse like on the PC

On the PC, my phones appear like a drive within Windows Explorer, which is wonderful:

You can see your photos listed, and if you want to grab one or several, it's a simple drag-and-drop procedure.

On my Mac, it wanted me to use iPhoto to import my pictures. But loading iPhoto, importing into it and then exporting out to get a picture I wanted was a pain.

Preview to the rescue

The answer for me has been to use Preview, something I stumbled upon last year, noticing it when I had my phone plugged in while using Preview for something else.

First, connect your phone to your Mac using a USB cable. Next, launch Preview. After you've done this, go to "File" in the menu options, then look for the "Import from" listing for your phone, which should appear.

Here's how it looks for my iPhone:

The next time you're looking for your misplaced Android smartphone, check the freezer. It's possible, however unlikely, that someone is trying to hack into your data using a new FROST attack method.

Researchers at Friedrich-Alexander University in Germany have learned that it is possible to access personal information on Android 4.0 smartphones using a chilling technique.

Called FROST, or forensic recovery of scrambled telephones, it amounts to placing the phone in temperatures of -15 Celsius for roughly 1 hour. After removing from a freezer, you must repeatedly power on and off the phone and hold down the volume up and down. In the case of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the university simply disconnected and reconnected the battery in very short (less than 500ms) bursts.

The team was able to successfully break into the phones and access contact lists, visited web sites, and photos using cold boot attacks. Even handsets that are encrypted are found to be vulnerable to the method; however, the bootloader must be first unlocked. Ironically, it was Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich that introduced disk ... Want to sell that movie you bought on iTunes but never watch? You may be able to one day if a new Apple patent filing ever comes to life.

Published today by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and filed last June, an Apple patent application named "Managing Access To Digital Content Items" conjures up a system for legally selling or loaning iTunes items to another person.
