6 Android tablet apps to help get you in the back-to-school spirit

School is different these days, with students sooner pulling out a 10-inch tablet to take notes than a sheet of loose-leaf paper and pen. Heck, even calculators are a rare sight to see in the modern classroom, with multifunction mobile apps serving as adequate replacements. With these sorts of changes in mind, I've put together a list of Android tablet apps to help you stay ahead of the game in school. All of them are useful for different reasons, and all of them are free to download.

MyHomework (free) Whether you're in high school or college, MyHomework is a great way for you to stay on top of your class schedule, due dates, and test days. Once you input all of your classes, you can link to them any homework, tests, papers, presentations, or other assignments. The app will remind you of upcoming due dates and keep track of any late items. Also, MyHomework is available on all major platforms, including on your desktop via Web browser, which is really convenient.

There are a lot of apps out there claiming to be the best at helping you save money by finding deals. Unfortunately, the app can't control the fact that humans forget things. So even though you printed that $5-off coupon, it doesn't mean you will remember to use it.

Clipless is one of those apps that really makes your smartphone feel "smart." Whenever you are at a place that offers a deal or coupon, the app will alert you. You don't have to worry about remembering what you had a coupon for, Clipless knows and will tell you about it when appropriate. It's a similar concept to Foursquare's "dreaming princess" idea -- anticipating the user's needs.

Good: The 2014 Hyundai Equus shows drivers blind-spot warnings and route guidance on its head-up display. The stereo produces remarkably good sound. An air suspension gives the car very smooth ride quality.
Bad: Fuel economy averages well below 20 mpg. The interface for the cabin electronics can be confusing, and Hyundai has not integrated any apps, such as Pandora.
Bottom Line: A big, powerful, luxury cruiser, the 2014 Hyundai Equus competes very well among stalwarts in the segment, undercutting most in price, and offers some unique tech features to help the driver. [Read more]

Good: The Nokia Lumia 625's 4.7-inch screen makes for effortless viewing, and the $300 price tag its wallet-friendly for an unlocked phone. Depending on your area, it also supports LTE.
Bad: For a phone of its size, the Lumia 625's too-low resolution is fuzzy and dull compared to premium Lumias. The 625's 5-megapixel camera struggles taking photos in the shade.
Bottom Line: Despite a few faults, the Lumia 625's smooth, higher-end design and solid performance make it a great value for the price. [Read more]
