Insignia Connected TV NS-42E859A11 Posted: 23 Sep 2011 05:00 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The relatively inexpensive Insignia Connected TV has decent black levels for the price. Its RF remote control doesn't need line of sight, and it offers a worthwhile selection of streaming services and apps. Bad: The TiVo interface is essentially window dressing, using it can be annoying, and the search function only works for the Insignia On Demand service. The TV's picture quality is characterized by unnatural color, uneven screen uniformity, and issues with 1080p/24 sources. It also has fewer picture adjustments than competitors. Bottom Line: The Insignia Connected TV is a competent television for the money, but the TiVo interface detracts from rather than adds to the experience. [Read more] |

Posted: 10 Sep 2011 03:18 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The lightweight, 8GB Archos 80 G9 tablet runs 1080p video smoothly, and its kickstand is a useful addition. Bad: The tablet is uncomfortable to hold, with disappointing viewing angles and awkward button placement. Its single camera has poor recording quality. Bottom Line: The 8GB Archos 80 G9 delivers a complete Honeycomb experience at a low price, but its rough design, low-quality camera, and awkward button placement make it feel rushed to market. Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220 - Fusion E-350 1.6GHz - 14-inch TFT Posted: 27 Jul 2011 06:43 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220 is a functioning laptop running Windows 7, with a 500GB hard drive. Bad: The Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220 has a sluggish, underperforming processor, disappointing battery life, and a price that hardly fits its performance. Bottom Line: Budget shoppers had best look elsewhere than the 14-inch Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220. A low-end processor and middling speed aren't worth the $499 asking price, and we've seen many laptops in the same range that offer more. [Read more] |
Posted: 21 Jul 2011 08:49 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Lenovo IdeaPad Y570 looks great and has a surprising amount of configuration flexibility for a mainstream laptop. Bad: The system is brimming with bloatware, and a physical switch for GPU modes is confusing. Bottom Line: A sharp-looking mainstream laptop with decent graphics and some configuration flexibility, the IdeaPad Y570 is a solid alternative to some of the better-known consumer laptop brands. Posted: 07 Jan 2011 03:46 AM PST Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Sony Handycam HDR-PJ10's built-in projector and stereo speakers are very convenient for sharing home movies. Plus, the HD camcorder has the same wide-angle lens, built-in USB cable, and good automated performance as its projector-free siblings. Bad: If you don't plan to use the projector, the rest of the camcorder's performance and feature set are a bit underpowered for the money. Bottom Line: You're paying a couple hundred extra for the projector in the otherwise frills-free Sony Handycam HDR-PJ10 over its identical twin, the CX160, but if you regularly show off your vacation videos in the homes of friends and family then it's worth it.
