Mozilla wants app submissions for its open-Web plans

Mozilla's Marketplace has begun accepting app submissions, looking toward the ultimate goal of building a standalone operating system for the open Web.

As part of the company's Boot to Gecko project, these apps would allow for cross-device and multi-operating system integration, which means anchoring the apps to the user and not to the device or platform.

"Using HTML, CSS and JavaScript, a developer can build an app using responsive design, and that app can offer the same look and feel as a device-native app, without having to rewrite for every desired target platform," Joe Stagner, Mozilla's senior program manager for development technologies and community, writes in a blog post. "One code base--all popular devices!"

MacBook Pro EFI update fixes flickering

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 05:14 PM PST

Last Saturday Apple released a number of EFI firmware updates for various Mac models, which addressed problems with NetBoot features, the use of HD displays for protected HD content, and boot drive selection when external drives are plugged into the systems. The updates were for Mac Mini, MacBook Air, iMac, and MacBook Pro systems.

After releasing these updates, Apple has issued another update for the MacBook Pro (version 2.7 was released on Saturday; this is version 2.8), which addresses a problem in which 15-inch models from late 2008 developed flickering displays. This fix is only applicable to the 2008 model.

Boot Camp cloning utility Winclone returns to OS X

Apple's move to Intel processors for its Mac systems in 2006 opened up many opportunities for Mac users, one of which was the ability to install and boot Windows directly on the Mac hardware without any emulation. To facilitate this for those who needed it, Apple introduced Boot Camp to easily partition the hard drive and supply drivers to the Windows OS for various features like iSight cameras and multitouch trackpads.

Boot Camp is a great option to have on the Mac, but unfortunately its support from Apple is rather limited, especially if you need to migrate from your older Mac to a newer one. While Apple offers a migration assistant tool that will transfer your Mac-based accounts, data, and applications to a new system, this tool does not transfer any Boot Camp installations. Therefore, if you have a Windows installation that you use, you will need to set it up from scratch on your new system.

To tackle this issue, the free utility Winclone was developed by Two Canoes Software to transfer Boot Camp installations from one system to another. The utility worked quite well, and was commonly recommended for people who needed to transfer or back up their Windows installations.

Unfortunately Winclone was not maintained and the project went silent for a few years. In this time, advancements in OS X, Windows, and Boot Camp resulted in the program no longer working for newer systems, so the utility lost its relevance and Mac users had to rely on virtu... [Read more]

CNET Download.com, social gaming company Kabam, and Sweetlabs, makers of Pokki, have teamed up to bring Windows users full-screen desktop versions of four popular (formerly) social network-based games.

Formerly only available on a Web browser, users would need to log in to social sites to play. With this launch using Pokki, the games require neither a Web browser nor a connection to social networking sites--these new Pokki desktop apps let you experience The Godfather: Five Families, Dragons of Atlantis, Edgeworld, and Thirst of Night in full screen on your Windows PC.

Get easy access to Pokki games and apps by clicking a button to the right of the Start Menu.
