Great cowboy games for iOS

Ah, the old West. Things were simpler (and a lot more dangerous) back then. Where your main means of transportation was your horse, a vast frontier was open to explore, and problems were solved with a six-shooter. At least, that's what it was like in the movies. But now you can bring that world and mentality to your iPhone.

This week's collection of iOS apps are all sharp-shootin' cowboy games. The first is a target shooter with extra elements that make it extra fun. The second is a dual-stick shooter with missions and evil bosses to gun down. The third lets you explore a huge and open 3D world on horseback--and it won't cost you any gold (or cash) at all.

In this level you're riding at high speed while you shoot bandits on a moving train.

McGyro (99 cents) is a fun target-shooting game where you tilt your iPhone to aim at targets in an old West setting. You play as the Sheriff McGyro, and your job is to blow away bad guys that appear as wooden targets.

The storyline is presented in comic book format between each part of the three-part missions. Each mission follows a simple formula: the introduction of a bad guy, traveling to the destination, killing the bad guy's evil henchmen, then killing the... [Read more]

More updates regarding the Download.com Installer

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 04:47 PM PST

Download Community,

I just wanted to send out a quick follow-up to my post on Wednesday.

(By the way, yes I now I have my own account, so I can post here myself. I wanted to get that last one up quickly since it was already late in coming, and Cat already had an account, so I went with it. Sad, but true. Oh, and because you all know who Cat is, but may have no clue who I am, I'm the General Manager of Download.com).

Clearly we had a big breakdown this past week and I sincerely apologize to our users and to our developer community. I especially want to apologize for our error in wrapping Nmap, and any open source software. It was truly unintended. We may be dumb enough to have screwed up, but we know what distinguishes us from other providers out there, and we want to have a much better record in delivering against that expectation. It truly sucks when we don't, and you've rightfully held our feet to the flame this week as a result.

We've taken immediate steps to make sure the download manager works like it's supposed to. Most importantly, of course, is the fact that offers are absolutely not supposed to be included with open source software downloads. We are revising many of our processes, we are scrubbing the catalog, and we will have these mistakes fixed as soon as humanly possible. In addition, we need to make ... [Read more]

How to sync Google Docs to your PC, Dropbox-style

Posted: 09 Dec 2011 11:05 AM PST

Ever wish your Google Docs account could perform the same syncing magic that Dropbox does? Now it can.

Working within the Cloud using Google Docs is a great way to ensure that your content is available whenever you need it. Well, almost whenever, as there are some situations (power/Internet outage, Google services down temporarily, etc.) where relying on the Cloud can leave you stuck.

KumoSync is a tool that can prevent you from being stranded without your data. It works by syncing your Google Docs data to your PC (even your shared content), so you can work on your computer at work or home and have the changes uploaded for you automatically. Follow these seven steps to set the program up.

What you'll need:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 or higher installed

  • A Google account

  • Microsoft Windows XP / Vista (32 & 64 Bit) / Windows 7 (32 & 64 Bit)

Begin by downloading and installing KumoSync. When exiting the installer, make sure the box is checked to load KumoSync immediately.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Google's new technology to secure the Web and make browsers significantly more powerful got its first public demo tonight at the company's headquarters south of San Francisco after three years under wraps.

Calling it Native Client, Google says that integrating technology into Chrome is essential for the future of Web browsers.

To show that Native Client is road-ready, the company used its event to announce several new Chrome-only versions of games known for their rich and processor-intensive graphics, available immediately. It also revealed that the browser currently has more than 200 million users worldwide.

The first public demonstration of Native Client started off with Ian Ellison-Taylor, director of product management for the open Web at Google, giving an overview of the questions that led to Native Client's creation.

Microsoft's new Windows Defender tool runs outside Windows

Microsoft's new offline version of Windows Defender can scan for malware outside Windows.

(Credit: Screenshot by Lance Whitney/CNET)

Microsoft is launching a new version of its Windows Defender antivirus tool that will run before Windows even boots up.

Making its debut as a publicly available beta, the new Windows Defender is designed to run directly off a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive to scan your PC outside of Windows. As such, its aim is to detect rootkit viruses and other malware that can infect your computer during the boot process.

You first need to install the software on a recordable disc or USB stick. You can then use that disc or device to boot up any PC and scan for malware.

To set up Windows Defender beta, simply download it from Microsoft's Web site. You're given a choice of the 32-bit or the 64-bit version depending on which version is supported by the PC you want to scan. Most PCs today use a 64-bit processor, so that version should work on any relatively recent computer.

Double-click on the downloaded file (mssstool32.exe for the 32-bit version and mssstool64.exe for the 64-bit version). The Windows Defender Offline Tool will launch and prompt you to have a CD, DVD, or USB drive ... [Read more]
