Apple MacBook Pro Fall 2011 (2.2GHz Core i7, 15-inch) Posted: 25 Oct 2011 01:29 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: Incremental updates to the CPU help keep the MacBook Pro line a step above the now-mainstream Air. The trackpad and gesture controls are still the best of any current laptop. Bad: Unless you need an optical drive, the MacBook Air may be better fit for most, and the Pro still lacks things we'd like to see, such as HDMI, Blu-ray, and USB 3.0. Bottom Line: A MacBook Pro is a significant investment, especially when adding in optional upgrades. Cost aside, there's not a better choice (there are, however, some close ties) for an all-around powerhouse that will work in the home, office, and in between. [Read more] |

Posted: 19 Oct 2011 07:37 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S exhibits excellent driving dynamics due to its active suspension, and outrageous acceleration with a dual-clutch transmission and direct injection engine. The premium Burmester audio system delivers finely detailed music reproduction. Bad: Voice command is not standard, and for close to $200k, we would expect more advanced cabin electronics. Bottom Line: With a powerful yet efficient engine and high-tech suspension, the pricey 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo S delivers near supercar performance, but the cabin electronics fall short of the bleeding edge. Samsung Transform Ultra (Boost Mobile) Posted: 15 Sep 2011 10:56 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The uncluttered Samsung Transform Ultra has a pleasing design, a front-facing camera, and runs on Android Gingerbread 2.3. It also carries Mobile ID, which some people may appreciate. Bad: As far as keyboards go, the Samsung Transform Ultra's is a little flat. Its camera quality is also pretty poor. Bottom Line: The Samsung Transform Ultra is a worthy QWERTY handset to join Boost Mobile's Android lineup. Mobile ID offers something different, but not everyone will want it. [Read more] |
HP Portable Hard Drive WDBACZ0010BBK - 1TB Posted: 16 Jul 2011 04:03 AM PDT Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The HP Portable Hard Drive offers an effective, affordable, and simple backup solution. The drive is bus-powered and supports both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. Bad: The HP Portable Hard Drive's data transfer speeds could be better. Its backup software doesn't include common features such as backing up entire user-selected folders or scheduling. Bottom Line: Despite a few shortcomings, the Windows-only HP Portable Hard Drive makes a very good and simple backup option for home users. [Read more] |
Posted: 11 Mar 2011 09:35 AM PST Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Samsung LND630 series exhibited very good picture quality, with relatively deep black levels, accurate color in bright areas and excellent video processing with proper handling of 1080p/24 sources. Its matte screen works well in bright lighting and the TV features numerous picture adjustment options and can stream video via USB and DLNA. We appreciated its classy styling. Bad: Shadow detail on the LND630 series was somewhat murky, its dark areas tinged were tinged a bit blue, and the benefits of 120Hz difficult to discern. A few slightly more expensive models have much better feature selections. Bottom Line: With image quality every bit as good as many expensive LED models, the Samsung LND630 is a great choice for a no-frills LCD TV. [Read more] |
Posted: 13 Feb 2011 11:53 AM PST Editor's Rating: User Rating: Good: The Canon PowerShot A800 is a no-frills point-and-shoot that takes AA-size batteries. It's easy to use and produces nice photos despite its low price. Bad: The A800 has slow shooting performance and a low-resolution LCD that's very difficult to see in bright sunlight. Bottom Line: Considering its bargain price, you'll get excellent photos from the Canon PowerShot A800. Just don't expect anything more than that and you'll be fine. [Read more] |
