BREIN takes down another 29 torrent, NZB sites

BREIN takes down another 29 torrent, NZB sitesBREIN, the Dutch anti-piracy group, has taken down 29 torrent and NZB sites this week although only one, HD-UNiT3D has been named.

Visitors to the HD-U site are now redirected to BREIN'S homepage.

HD-U and the other were hosted in the United States but a BREIN spokesperson said the sites were "directed at the Dutch public and unlawful under Dutch law."

The spokesperson added:
"This year we have made over 600 of these sites inaccessible. Some seek refuge in a foreign hosting provider. These 29 apparently thought that in America they could go undisturbed. That is incorrect.

Through cooperation with our foreign colleagues we can make sites in other countries inaccessible."

In regards to "foreign colleagues" for the recent raid, BREIN used the MPAA.

While it is true BREIN has taken down a significant amount of sites this year, most have been relatively small and unimportant.

T-Mobile, Nokia announce Long Term HSPA Evolution, with speeds over 650 Mbps

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 06:04 PM PST

T-Mobile, Nokia announce Long Term HSPA Evolution, with speeds over 650 MbpsT-Mobile USA and Nokia have announced Long Term HSPA Evolution, a new mobile data standard that promises speeds over 650 Mbps.

Commercial deployment of the standard is expected as soon as 2013.

The current HSPA+ "4G" network offered by T-Mobile in the United States offers speeds of up to 21 Mbps, and the carrier says those speeds will be doubled to 42 Mbps next year.

Says T-Mobile CTO Neville Ray: "Long Term HSPA Evolution will allow us to enhance our 4G mobile broadband network beyond its current and planned near term capabilities, and provide room for considerable growth and speed enhancements. As customer demand for wireless data increases, we are well positioned to compete based on the speed, breadth and evolution path of our mobile broadband service."!-- PAGE BREAK -->

The most notable features of the new standard:

-HSDPA Multicarrier evolution: Combines up to eight carriers and provides peak data rates of up to 672 Mbps along with improving spectrum utilization. To overcome operators' spectrum fragmentation constraints, HSDPA carrier aggregation enables carriers from more than one frequency band to be combined.

-HSDPA Multipoint transmission: Significantly increases the cell edge data rate by coordinating and combining signals from multiple antennas.

-Dual antenna beamforming and MIMO in uplink: Improves the uplink performance with dual-antenna transmission, doubling the uplink peak data rate and improving the user average data rate by 30 percent with 2 x 2 MIMO/ beam forming. With 2 x 4 MIMO, over 100 percent increase in average user data rates can be achieved due to beam forming gain and four receive antennas in the base station.

Verizon and AT&T are set to rollout their LTE 4G networks starting this month and into next year.

Analyst adds Verizon iPhone sales into 2011 estimates

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 05:33 PM PST

Analyst adds Verizon iPhone sales into 2011 estimatesAlthough it has yet to be confirmed by either Verizon or Apple, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has ramped up his iPhone sales estimates for 2011, fully "baking" in sales for a Verizon model of the popular iOS smartphone.

Rumors have been flying around for months that a Verizon iPhone is ready for launch in the Q1 2011 and Munster believes a CDMA iPhone is indeed on the way.

In a note to clients, Munster said:
"We previously had Verizon partially baked into our model along with some cannibalization built in for iPhones sales at AT&T, but an early- or mid-[calendar year 2011] launch at Verizon is now fully baked into our CY11 estimates."

Munster's estimates model places the Verizon launch around April, or at least somewhere in the early Q2.

Giving shareholders something to cheer about, Munster moved his expected price target for Apple to $438. The stock closed after hours today at $319.66.

Posted: 15 Dec 2010 05:17 PM PST

Mark Zuckerberg is Time's Person of the YearTime magazine has dubbed Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg their 2010 Person of the Year 2010.

Says Time:
For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them; for creating a new system of exchanging information; and for changing how we all live our lives, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is TIME's 2010 Person of the Year.

Zuckerberg, who dropped out of Harvard in 2004 to start the service, owns 24 percent of Facebook's private shares, which should make him worth over $6 billion when the company goes public next year.

In response to the honor, Zuckerberg said (via his FB page):
Being named as TIME Person of the Year is a real honor and recognition of how our little team is building something that hundreds of millions of people want to use to make the world more open and connected. I'm happy to be a part of that.

The youngest billionaire in the world, at 26, Zuckerberg has already joined "Giving Pledge," the joint effort of Warren Buffett and Bill Gates to convince other billionaires to give away most of their wealth to charities.

"Giving Pledge" counts Michael Bloomberg, Ted Turner, George Lucas and Barry Diller amongst its roster.

Julian Assange, the head of WikiLeaks, handily won the online vote, but came in second to Zuckerberg.
